Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, marks the beginning of the five-day-long Diwali festivities. This year, the auspicious day will be observed on October 18. During this time, people worship Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera and Lord Dhanvantari, seeking their divine blessings for wealth, prosperity, good fortune and health.

The term ‘Dhanteras’ is made up of two Sanskrit words, ‘Dhana’ (meaning wealth) and ‘Teras’ (meaning the 13th day). This sacred day is celebrated on the 13th lunar day of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in the Kartik month.

The festival is marked by the tradition of buying new items like gold, silver, utensils, and electronics to welcome good fortune and prosperity into their homes. Here we list down things that you should buy and not buy on this day.
