Jonathan Smith had yet to coach a winning season at Oregon State when he started recruiting tight end Jack Velling. Yet the former three-star recruit from Seattle signed on with the Beavers, who finally put together a winning record in his senior year of high school. By the time Velling got there as a freshman, Smith led Oregon State to its first 10-win season since 2006.
