DULUTH — Despite vigorous discussion Wednesday night, planning commission members lacked the votes needed to move forward with a city staff recommendation that could set the stage for up to 230 acres of former golf course property to be redeveloped.

Staff has proposed that the planning commission support the conveyance of the land to the Duluth Economic Development Authority in hopes of seeing it sold to a developer.

But seven of the planning commission’s nine members would need to support the proposal to bring it forward, and only six members made it to Wednesday’s meeting.

What’s more, two of the six commissioners in attendance came out against transferring ownership of the former Lester Park Golf Course property to DEDA.
