Joe Bravaco’s two-hander The One Good Thing, Or ‘Are Ya Patrick Swayze?, currently making its U.S. premiere at Washington Stage Guild, was partly inspired by the Sinéad O’Connor song “I’ll Be Singing,” which features prominently in the show. On the track, O’Connor’s signature rage and pain are set aside in favor of tenderness, and it’s played more like a traditional Irish hymn, with an arrangement that starts out sparse and then crescendos. This is fitting for a show about brotherly love that is remarkably sensitive and humane, and that appears straightforward but contains delicate layers, exploring both grief and humor.
