In the Chicago-area community, John Wayne Gacy was seen as a stand-up guy for much of the 1970s. But behind closed doors, he was carrying out a series of brutal crimes that would make him one of history’s most infamous serial killers .

Gacy, who owned and operated a remodeling business, was deeply involved in his community — he volunteered at childrens’ hospitals dressed as “Pogo the Clown,” acted as director of the annual Polish Constitution Day Parade and even met First Lady Rosalynn Carter in May 1978.
