Prime Minister Mark Carney says the federal government will introduce new bail reform legislation next week aimed at keeping violent and repeat offenders out of Canadian communities. Speaking Thursday in Etobicoke, Ont., Carney said the bill will include targeted amendments to the Criminal Code to close what he described as gaps in public safety.

The new legislation will focus on those accused of serious offences, including violent auto theft, break and enter, human trafficking, sexual assault, and other violent crimes. Carney said the bill will make it harder for people charged with such crimes to be released while awaiting trial.
