Democrats slammed House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) for declaring support for Capitol Police officers despite President Donald Trump pardoning those who attacked law enforcement on Jan. 6, 2021.

A reporter asked Johnson on Wednesday whether Capitol Police should be paid during the shutdown, noting that the administration is working to pay the military and federal law enforcement while the government is closed. According to NBC News , Capitol Police officers missed their first full paychecks last week due to the shutdown.

“Yeah, we’ve always stood with Capitol police and law enforcement, and we’ve shown that in word and deed,” Johnson told reporters, noting that Trump and budget chief Russ Vought are “forlorn” about the shutdown.
