Southfield — The first Detroit mayoral debate between Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield and the Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr. was a feisty one-hour affair featuring personal attacks that two local political analysts said didn't appear to disturb Sheffield's frontrunner status.
In the candidates' first face-to-face meeting on Wednesday at WXYZ-TV's studios in Southfield, Kinloch sought to gain ground on Sheffield, the perceived frontrunner who took 51% of the vote in the August primary to his 17%. He questioned her three-term tenure on the City Council, whether enough progress has been made on key issues such as crime and highlighted a recent controversy involving concert tickets .
