While the fighting has stopped, pain remains for those with ties to region

Calgarians with attachments to Palestine and Israel are voicing relief, but also some concern, regarding a ceasefire deal declared over the weekend.

The deal that went into effect after more than two years of fighting between Hamas and Israeli forces is welcome, said Tamer Jarada.

But Jarada, who says he lost 18 family members in the conflict, notes that relief is greatly tempered by what lies ahead for those left homeless and hungry in Gaza.

“I’m honestly not optimistic about the recent development,” said Gaza native Jarada, 48, who’s lived in Canada for 15 years.

“The only thing giving me comfort is the killing is less than what it was before the signing of the agreement.”
