FORT MITCHELL, Ala. (WTVM) - Wild hogs have been digging up grass at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery for several days, and officials say the government shutdown prevents them from taking action to stop the animals or repair the damage.

Family members visiting loved ones’ graves have discovered patches of grass dug up from the roots throughout the memorial site. Cemetery staff told visitors the wild hogs are causing the damage overnight.

Sherer Kern of Phenix City was shocked during her monthly visit to her husband’s burial site to see the memorial grounds damaged. The site supervisor told her wild hogs were responsible and that the cemetery could not take action due to the government shutdown.
