SEATTLE—They call him Mad Max for a reason.

Max Scherzer summoned his Hall of Fame self Thursday night in Seattle, putting together his best start in months and his best playoff outing in four years. And as a result, the American League championship series is guaranteed to go back to Toronto for a Game 6 on Sunday thanks to an 8-2 Blue Jays win over the Mariners.

Scherzer came into Game 4 having not pitched in more than three weeks after he was left off the Jays’ roster for the American League division series against the New York Yankees. In his final six regular-season starts, he had allowed 25 runs over 25 innings of work. He’d been scored on in the first inning in each of his last five starts.
