A President Donald Trump biographer who once brushed off claims of a Trump third term now says that threat is very real, and the Supreme Court may help him, according to The Daily Beast.
Michael Wolff told The Daily Beast's "Inside Trump's Head" podcast that Trump's actions seem to be putting into place "the mechanisms which might ensure continued electoral success.”
As for how the Supreme Court could aid in Trump's quest, Wolff points to the midterm elections, saying a pending ruling on the legality of the 1965 Voting Rights Act could "make a Democratic flip of the House of Representatives extremely unlikely."
And then there's Trump's growing authoritarianism, Wolff says.
“The thing about an authoritarian... you can go down the list here of Donald Trump targeting — specifically targeting — his political opponents, Donald Trump exerting ever more control over courts, media, universities, businesses, of him explicitly targeting blue state governors and legislatures, and finally, locking in the mechanisms which might ensure continued electoral success,” Wolff said.
“These are the moves of an authoritarian, clearly,” Wolff said, backpedaling on his previous dismissal of the possibility of a third Trump term.
“I’m going to take it back, I think that it becomes a very real possibility that he will undo the impediments to a third term," Wolff said.
The White House, which has previously called Wolff a "lying sack of s——," replied to The Daily Beast's request for comment on this with a picture of Trump 2028 hats sitting on the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office.
Wolff says it's no joke.
“The problem with this is that an authoritarian breaks so many rules and makes so many enemies that in order to avoid retribution, he has to stay in power,” Wolff told The Daily Beast.
“That is the nature of the game that is being played."
