There was an audible gasp in the rink as a speeding Mason Walker smartly stepped around a defender, then cut across in front of the goaltender and slipped his second goal of the night into a yawning cage.

If his recent reassignment by the Sudbury Wolves did anything to hurt Walker’s confidence, it certainly didn’t show as the swift-skating forward made a triumphant return to the Greater Sudbury Cubs’ lineup at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex on Thursday night. Indeed, the local product looked as assured as ever in scoring his first NOJHL hat trick to lead the hosts to a 5-2 win over the French River Rapids.

“It was good,” smiled Walker, the 5-foot-10, 170-pounder, who won a championship with the Cubs in 2024-25.
