There are a few staple plots that many cartoons inevitably return to: the vacation episode, the Christmas episode, the “it was all a dream” episode, etc. But one of the most consistently fun of these is the Halloween special, which gives characters a chance to not only dress up but trade in the most unhinged fantasies that the series’ creators can muster. Whether they’re just trying to get some candy or are forced to save the town from malevolent forces (often, they have to do both!), our favorite animated figures are given some of their most memorable adventures in the Halloween special. And luckily enough for parents, many of them are safe for kids, even when they do lean a little spookier than normal episodes.
