DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers haven’t extended a qualifying offer to one of their impending free agents since 2014.

Could this be the year that changes?

Major League Baseball has officially set the qualifying offer price at $22.025 million, according to the Associated Press . That’s 4.6 percent higher than last year.

The qualifying offer system allows MLB teams to extend a one-year contract to eligible free agents based on the average salary of the 125 highest-paid players. Since elite players usually prefer multi-year deals, QOs are rarely accepted. But extending one allows teams that lose players to receive draft-pick compensation.
