The Gallatin County attorney’s office said it will not charge a Montana State University detective who was accused of rape earlier this year, stating that there was “insufficient evidence” to proceed with criminal charges.

The office for the county attorney, Audrey Cromwell, said in a press release from last week that the decision followed an additional review by the Montana Attorney General’s Office, which concurred with her office’s assessment.

The determination caps a monthslong investigation into MSU police detective Gregory Mauldin, who has been on restricted duty since July following allegations by a woman from Anaconda. He will now return to “full duty status,” according to an MSU spokesperson.
