Following what seems like an eternity of overcast skies and miserable conditions, the Met Office has confirmed that brighter weather is finally approaching.

The dismal conditions experienced this week have been down to a high-pressure system dubbed "anticyclonic gloom", which locks moisture and low cloud close to the surface, resulting in stagnant, grey days with minimal sunshine.

But forecasters say this pattern is about to shift over the weekend, with sunnier intervals and more changeable conditions on the horizon.
