I ran the Pentagon press office. Its new rules must not stand.

Regarding the Oct. 16 news article “Reporters leave Pentagon en masse over new rules”:

I was director of the Pentagon press office during the Panama intervention (Just Cause) and the Gulf War (Desert Shield and Desert Storm). My bosses were Dick Cheney, Colin Powell and my immediate superior, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Pete Williams.
