A Thursday evening fire at the BP Whiting refinery caused internal sirens and flares to go off, a social media post from the company announced Friday morning.
“The BP Whiting refinery responded to an operational incident that resulted in a fire that was promptly extinguished,” the facility’s Facebook post said. “As a result, the community may have heard internal refinery sirens and noticed flaring. There were no injuries. Our top priority is the safety of our employees, contractors, and the community. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our neighbors.”
The Whiting Fire Department confirmed in a Facebook post that the fire occurred Thursday night. Lisa Vallee, a Whiting resident, said she heard sirens at about 10 p.m. Thursday.
