KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Jerry Nemeth was one of the many family members cheering for the Michigan National Guard's 1430 Engineer Company as they walked off the ice of Western Michigan University's Lawson Ice Arena.

One of those soldiers is Nemeth's nephew.

"We're just happy that so many of these, not just my nephew, but all these troops, are going to serve our country," said Nemeth.

The troops are headed south to the U.S. and Mexico border, according to Brigadier General Robbie Wagh, where they will be supporting Customs and Border Protection agents.

"One of the things that really is the strength of the National Guard is our flexibility, understanding this is an engineer unit with a very specific skill set that we've employed as an engineer unit, often in some of their missions historically
