During News 12’s Ask the Candidate on Thursday, Republican gubernatorial hopeful Jack Ciattarelli defended Donald Trump’s cancellation of the Gateway Tunnel project, calling it a negotiating tactic with Democrats during the government shutdown. Ciattarelli insisted he supports the project and believes it should be paid for with federal funds, but his effort to downplay Trump’s role could raise eyebrows.

When pressed on whether he’d discuss the issue directly with Trump before the election to tell him this is a bad idea, Ciattarelli answered, “Absolutely, this is the first I’ve heard of his, what he said about the Gateway Project.”

However, that explanation doesn’t add up as Ciattarelli seems to have reacted to Trump’s Oval Office comments by Wednesday evening in a post to X, noting he
