CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Plans for the Summit Carbon Solutions pipeline through Iowa face uncertainty after South Dakota legislation blocked the planned five-state pipeline project.
The Iowa Utilities Commission approved a permit in June 2023 for Summit Carbon Solutions to build more than 600 miles of pipeline across Iowa, but required the company to gain permits in the Dakotas before beginning construction.
This week, Summit Carbon Solutions filed a petition to amend that permit to allow construction in Iowa without needing approval from North or South Dakota.
The petition follows South Dakota’s enactment of a law earlier this year to stop the use of eminent domain for the project. The state has denied Summit’s permit requests twice.
