PHOENIX — Governor Katie Hobbs on Friday declared a state of emergency in Tempe after storms caused significant damage earlier in the week.

Tempe Mayor Corey Woods issued a state of emergency on Wednesday to seek assistance from county and state officials to help in recovery efforts.

"These declarations are needed to be able to move forward to apply for potential federal funding," Tempe officials said in a social media post.

More than 500 homes and 70 businesses in the city reported damage from the powerful microburst, which caused power outages and trees to be knocked down throughout Tempe. An estimated 130 residents were displaced by the storm's damage.

The strong winds from the microburst were powerful enough to partially rip the roof off a building located near Kyrene and Baseline
