Former Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce has said he will not stand for his seat of New England at the next election, citing fractured relationships with the party's leadership.

The high-profile MP said he does plan to see out the rest of his term, though.

"My relationship with the leadership of the Nationals in Canberra has unfortunately, like a sadness in some marriages, irreparably broken down," he wrote in a letter to branch members.

Reports have recently claimed that Mr Joyce is in talks with Pauline Hanson about switching to One Nation, which was not confirmed in the statement, but he said he had kept his options open.

"I am free to now consider all options as to what I do next," he said.
