Driving along a highway in Kingsport, Tennessee, during a steady downpour, patrol officer Lance Willis noticed traffic slowing ahead.

At first, he assumed there had been an accident. But as he drew closer, the real reason became clear. A lone German Shepherd had wandered into the middle of the road, directly in the path of oncoming vehicles.

With visibility poor and cars moving fast, the situation was critical. The frightened dog could have been hit at any moment, and Willis knew he had to react immediately.
