A significant fire erupted on Saturday at the Brahmaputra Apartments, a residential complex for Rajya Sabha MPs located just 200 meters from the Parliament in Delhi. The blaze began on one of the upper floors, causing widespread panic among residents. Fire services received the first alert at 1:23 PM and dispatched six fire tenders to the scene. The fire was brought under control by approximately 2:10 PM, but the cause remains unknown.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire hydrant system in the building was non-functional, with no water available in the tanks or pipelines. A resident expressed concern, stating, "We checked the fire extinguishing facility after spotting the fire, but there was no water. The fire hydrant was not working."
Among those affected was Kamal, the personal assistant of Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Bansa, who lamented the loss of all his belongings in the fire. He stated, "I was in the office, so I don’t know what caused the fire. We have lost everything - jewellery, clothes, fridge, and all other household items, including documents. I’ll have to start my life from zero."
Another resident, Vinod, shared that his wife and children suffered burn injuries and are currently receiving treatment. He expressed his distress over losing valuable items, including jewellery intended for his daughter's wedding. "My dog was stuck inside. My daughter is about to be married in a matter of months, and all the jewellery, gold, and clothes we had bought are also inside," he said.
The incident has raised concerns about fire safety measures in the building, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2020. Further investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire and assess the damage.
