Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — that’s the full name of what’s commonly referred to by the initials SNAP. In years past, it was simply known as food stamps. Pay special attention to the word “ nutrition ,” since that word alone likely is going to prompt debate in the coming months.

At issue is whether SNAP recipients should be able to use those funds to purchase things like candy and soda. As reported earlier this week by the North Dakota Monitor, the state Department of Health and Human Services is expected to seek permission from the federal government to prohibit certain foods from being purchased with SNAP funds.
