COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Shorter wait times at the DMV could be on the horizon for millions of drivers in South Carolina.

It’s part of a massive tech overhaul that will come with a hefty price tag, but which is years overdue, according to Department of Motor Vehicles officials.

Customers will see a difference, they said.

“The things that they have to come into the office for today, a lot of those things will be able to be done remotely, online,” SCDMV Chief of Staff and Director of Operations Rob Bailes said.

The DMV is getting started on what it describes as a modernization of its entire computer and IT system, which is more than 20 years old and well outdated.
