It’s sad and disturbing, but not surprising, that Prairie Public Broadcasting eliminated 12 positions. This doesn’t nearly balance Prairie Public’s budget, so don’t be surprised if some popular programs also get the axe.

None of this is Prairie Public’s fault. The blame falls on the shoulders of North Dakota Sens. John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer, North Dakota Rep. Julie Fedorchak, Minnesota Rep. Michelle Fischbach and other Republicans in Congress. They voted to abolish all federal funding for public broadcasting.

Also guilty are most Republicans in the North Dakota Legislature, who shamefully slashed Prairie Public’s funding by two-thirds, leaving it with just $400,000. Between the federal government and the state, Prairie Public lost $2.7 million.
