ASHLAND, Neb. —

A grand jury investigated the circumstances surrounding an in-custody death in Saunders County. The Saunders County Attorney Jennifer Joakim certified a grand jury for the death of Nickolas Sachau.

On the morning of June 28, Officer Amy Strode with the Ashland Police Department responded to a crash involving one vehicle near the intersection of Highway 6 and Highway 63. The driver of the vehicle was observed by the officer in a ditch near the site of the crash. While being questioned by the officer, Sachau pulled out a handgun and shot himself.

Police say bodycam footage confirmed that the officer did not fire any shots and never drew her weapon. Lifesaving efforts were performed, but Sachau was later pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy revealed the cause of death t
