The Montreal Canadiens announced on Saturday that defenseman Kaiden Guhle will be out for four to six weeks due to a lower-body injury. The injury occurred during the Canadiens' 3-2 victory over the Nashville Predators on Thursday night at the Bell Centre. In addition to Guhle, forwards Kirby Dach and Patrik Laine are also injured and will not play in Saturday's game against the New York Rangers. Both Dach and Laine are listed as day-to-day with lower-body injuries. To address the roster changes, the Canadiens have called up forward Owen Beck from the AHL’s Laval Rocket on an emergency basis. With Dach and Laine unavailable, Joe Veleno will make his debut with the Canadiens after being a healthy scratch for the first four games of the season. Defenseman Arber Xhekaj, who was a healthy scratch against the Predators, will return to the lineup to fill Guhle’s position. During Saturday's morning skate, the Canadiens' forward lines and defense pairings were adjusted as follows: - Cole Caufield – Nick Suzuki – Juraj Slafkovsky - Zachary Bolduc – Joe Veleno – Owen Beck - Alex Newhook – Oliver Kapanen – Ivan Demidov - Josh Anderson – Jake Evans – Brendan Gallagher - Mike Matheson – Noah Dobson - Jayden Struble – Lane Hutson - Xhekaj – Alexandre Carrier Samuel Montembeault will start in goal for the Canadiens. Guhle, 23, has struggled with injuries since being drafted by the Canadiens in the first round (16th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft. Last season, he underwent surgery to remove his appendix just before training camp. He managed to return for the season opener but missed five games later in October due to an upper-body injury and another game in December due to illness. Guhle also suffered a lacerated quadricep muscle during a game against the Winnipeg Jets on January 28, which sidelined him for 21 games. In total, Guhle has missed 77 games over his four seasons with the Canadiens. Dach has faced his own injury challenges, having undergone surgery on his right knee in each of the last two seasons, limiting him to 59 games during that time. Laine also dealt with injuries last season, missing the first 24 games due to a sprained knee sustained during training camp. The latest injury to Guhle means that both Xhekaj and Struble will be in the lineup for an extended period. Struble, who was a healthy scratch for the first four games, will take Guhle’s spot alongside Hutson. "He makes it pretty easy," Struble said about playing with Hutson. "He’s just such a great player. When I’m with him it’s kind of my job to just get us out of the D-zone as quick as possible. Just killing plays, being hard. And then when we get in the O-zone and the neutral zone it’s all him." Head coach Martin St. Louis commented on the situation, noting the importance of players understanding their roles. "There’s two ways to look at it. Does it calm them down to know that they’re going to have a runway? We never ask our players to be perfect. It’s a competitive league. As a young guy, yeah, you got to earn to stay in the lineup," he said. St. Louis also mentioned that having Gallagher replace Laine on the fourth line with Anderson and Evans could provide better matchups and momentum for the team. The Canadiens will face the Rangers at 7 p.m. at the Bell Centre.
