WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - The New York State Office of Emergency Management has issued a Fire Weather Watch for St. Lawrence County through 8:00 p.m. Sunday.

NYS OEM says the watch has been issued due to "the area being dry for a substantial amount of time," with low humidity and high winds also contributing to the increased chance for wildfires.

OEM warns to prepare now by being aware of local burn bans, keeping flammable materials at least thirty feet away from your home, closing door and windows, and learning evacuation routes.

In the event of a fire, OEM says to obey local officials, pay attention to emergency alerts, and limit your exposure to smoke, recommending using an N95 mask to protect from smoke inhalation.
