A protest at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Saturday escalated into a clash between students and Delhi Police, resulting in the detention of 28 students, including key student leaders. The students were attempting to march to the Vasant Kunj police station to demand the registration of an FIR against the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for alleged violence during a General Body Meeting (GBM) held on Dussehra.

The protest was organized by left-affiliated student groups, who accused the ABVP of attacking them during the meeting. JNUSU president Nitish Kumar claimed that police used excessive force against the students, stating, "We were beaten up. My clothes are torn, my mobile phone is stolen and my slippers are broken." He further alleged that the police did not intervene when ABVP members attacked them during the meeting.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) reported that the students were detained to prevent further incidents, asserting that the group had attempted to break through police barricades and had verbally abused officers. The police also mentioned that six officers sustained injuries during the confrontation.

The All India Students' Association (AISA) condemned the police actions, claiming that the JNUSU president and other students were "brutally beaten up" while demanding accountability for the ABVP's actions. They described the situation as a continuation of ABVP's "hooliganism" disrupting democratic processes at JNU.

The police characterized the incident as a "minor scuffle" and noted that no formal complaints had been filed with the university administration. The tensions at JNU have been rising, particularly between left and right-wing student groups, as the student union elections approach.

As the situation develops, the detained students have called for their release and the registration of their complaints against the ABVP and police actions.
