SANTA FE, N.M. —

The State Supreme Court this week has issued an order that temporarily halt the criminal trial against former New Mexico State University basketball player, Deshawndre Washington. The petition was field Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Jury selection was scheduled to begin, Monday Oct. 20.

A petition filed by lawyer Scott Davison on behalf of Washington asked for permission to allow attorney Michael Cain to withdraw from the case. On Friday, October 17, the court said the trial would not begin until a response to the petition is submitted by Oct. 31 or before.

Washington was one of three members of the NMSU basketball team allegedly involved in ongoing "hazing" that later resulted in felony sexual assault. The two other players, Doc Bradley and Kim Aiken, reached plea agreements that
