WILLIAMSBURG — The William & Mary football team earned an impressive, hard-fought 26-21 comeback victory against Elon in front of a large Homecoming crowd at Zable Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Although W&M (4-3, 3-1) trailed 14-3 late in the second quarter, it charged back with 23 consecutive points en route to securing the important conference victory.
A pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Tyler Hughes to wide receiver Deven Thompson – a 16-yard strike late in the second quarter and a 39-yard score early in the third quarter – gave the Tribe a 17-14 lead that it would not relinquish.
After a safety, which came on a bad snap by Elon’s (4-4, 2-2) punting unit, increased the margin to 19-14, W&M added another touchdown with a 6-yard scamper by Hughes late in the third quarter.
