At the end of their first season under new head coach Scott Else, the Grand Junction High School softball team is heading to the state tournament. The Tigers earned their spot after finishing second in their home regional, hosted at Canyon View Park on Saturday.
The Tigers’ second-place finish was not without drama.
After dispatching Vista Ridge 8-5 in the first game and putting themselves one win away from a trip to state, Grand Junction’s offense came out flat in the second game, sputtering to the tune of only four hits in a 12-0 loss against Riverdale Ridge. After allowing a seven-run fifth inning outburst, the Tigers were on the ropes and needed to find a way to win their consolation game to remain alive in the quest for a state title.
