On Oct. 1, Secretary of Education Linda McMahon sent a letter to the presidents of several premier American universities (MIT, the University of Arizona, Southern California, the University of Texas system, Brown, Dartmouth, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Virginia and Vanderbilt). The letter informed them of the planned release of a document entitled “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.” The Chronicle of Higher Education received a copy of the compact from the president of the University of Virginia.
