The removal of debris from the former General Hospital is officially underway.

The beeping sound from dump truck alarms backing up and workers in bright orange vests can be heard and seen at the rear of former hospital.

Debris piles are being loaded into dump trucks while rows of large, white-wrapped bags of debris can also be spotted ready for removal.

It’s the first step in the demolition of the already crumbling building.

Mayor Matthew Shoemaker announced on social media Friday that the demolition permit has been issued and work was to begin this week.

“GFL is on site and will begin hauling away the rubble. About 10 loads per day are expected to be removed over the next two to three weeks, clearing the way for demolition after that,” his post read.
