Former University of Hawaii quarterback Jason Whieldon, who sparked one of the program’s most surprising victories, died this past weekend in California.

He was 43. No cause of death was announced.

“It’s sad, really sad,” said former UH head coach June Jones, who signed Whieldon in February 2002. “Heart-wrenching.”

Whieldon was a 2000 Orange Lutheran High graduate who attended Saddleback College for two years before transferring to UH. He was manager of Whieldon Cement Works, according his Linkedin profile.

UH head coach Timmy Chang, a former record-setting quarterback, and Whieldon were the best of friends and competitors.
