WOODCLIFF LAKE, New Jersey (WABC) -- A woman is recovering after being attacked by a coyote while she was outside with her dog in Bergen County on Monday afternoon.

The attack happened around 1:20 p.m. at a home in Woodcliff Lake.

According to Woodcliff Lake Police Capt. Chad Malloy, a coyote bit a woman on her leg, arm and back while she was with her golden retriever in their backyard. Officials say the coyote also went after the woman's dog, but it was not injured during the encounter.

The coyote then took off.

The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries from the attack. She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police in the meantime are urging residents to be aware of their surroundings, especially while outside with small pets.
