After a crackdown from the Big 12 Conference, the Texas Tech Red Raiders are making some changes at home games inside Jones AT&T Stadium, and it's one that will likely have a lot of fans upset. On Monday, Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt officially asked fans at Red Raiders games to cease the tradition of throwing tortillas at the opening kickoff of home games.

"As we move forward, we are no longer going to encourage nor permit the throwing of tortillas at the opening kick for our home football games," Hocutt said alongside head coach Joey McGuire.

While this may be a non-story for much of the college football world, and a trivial topic, if anything, it's something that will likely cause some outrage for Red Raiders fans. Going back to the 1990s, it has become tradition for Texas Tech fans to throw tortillas at the opening kickoff of home games inside Jones AT&T Stadium. Why? Who knows. There are several theories as to the reason, but no official birth of the tradition.

Regardless of when or how it got started, the ending is abrupt and sudden.

Ultimately, it's not something that Tech is doing by its own valition, either. The new ask from Hocutt comes after the Big 12 ADs voted before the season, 15-1, to assess a 15-yard penalty after two warnings for objects being thrown on the field, with Hocutt the lone dissenter.

However, the Big 12 has since amended the ruling, now adding that a $100,000 fine would come to any university after that penalty was called in a game.

While the fans may be upset at the change of tradition, it's not hard to see where Texas Tech is coming from in their decision to ask fans to stop. Having to pay a $100,000 fine for every home game of the year is not sustainable, and at some point, things change.

The question now, though, is how long it will take for fans to actually stop throwing tortiallas and racking up penalties — and fines — for the university. While many are good-natured, you only need a few detractors in order to cuase a scene and create some chaos.
