ARCHDALE, N.C. — An international outage involving Amazon Web Services (AWS) caused major disruptions Monday, affecting everything from restaurant registers to college classrooms across the Triad.
Amazon said it “fully mitigated” the issue just after 2 a.m., but by midday, many systems were still down or running slowly. AWS powers thousands of websites and applications around the world, including systems used by small businesses, schools, and national companies like Snapchat, Ring, and Roku.
In Archdale, King’s BBQ and Burgers owner Ben King said his restaurant’s point-of-sale system, Figure Software, went offline for hours. The outage stopped orders from reaching the kitchen and forced staff to enter credit card totals manually.
