Purdue point guard Braden Smith was named a unanimous preseason All-American by the Associated Press, it revealed Monday.
Smith, a senior out of Westfield, was a first-team All-American selection last season, when he averaged 15.8 points, 8.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 38.1% from 3-point range. That performance earned him the Bob Cousy Award as the best point guard in the country and he was named Big Ten Player of the Year.
The 2022 Indiana Mr. Basketball is the lone returning first-team All-American in the country this season. He has set the Big Ten assists record in each of the last two seasons and needs just 242 plus 125 points to become the first player in NCAA history with 1,500 points, 1,000 assists and 500 rebounds.
