HARVEY, Ill. (WLS) -- Harvey Firemen's Association Local 471 says the south suburban village's fire chief told members on Monday that 17 firefighters will be furloughed without benefits due to major budget issues .

That's nearly half of the Harvey Fire Department. The furlough takes effect on Tuesday.

Just last week, the village city council started the process of allowing the state to review their finances.

The mayor says the village is more than $160 million in debt.

ABC7 reached out to the mayor's office for comment but did not immediately hear back.
