Right now, Florida homeowners pay an average of $2,338 in property taxes per year. For properties with a homestead exemption, the tax savings ranges between $800 and $1,500 annually.
But, both Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and Republican Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez say, that’s not a big enough savings.
“I want Florida residents in their homes to be able to own that and to be meaningful without continuing to have to pay rent to the government indefinitely,” DeSantis said earlier this month.
Perez has unveiled eight proposals, that could be spun into other similar plans, to cut or eliminate property taxes. He wants to give voters the opportunity to enshrine property tax savings in the State Constitution through ballot initiatives in the November 2026 general election.
