Philip Anschutz, a billionaire born in Russell, Kansas, is the Sunflower State's largest private landowner.

The 85-year-old Anschutz owns the 250,000-acre Baughman Farms, the World Population Review website said in an article that identified the private owners who possess the most property in each of the 50 states.

"Approximately 60% of land in the United States is privately owned, and just a few individuals and families control a significant proportion of this land," World Population Review said.

Anschutz, who lives in Denver , has built fortunes in oil, railroads, telecom, real estate and entertainment.

In 1970 , he bought Baughman Farms, one of the nation's largest farming corporations.

Baughman Farms is located in Liberal in southwest Kansas.
