The research article I will discuss this month explores horse preference for different grass species when made into hay.
The study, conducted by S.L. Mastellar and colleagues at the Ohio State University in 2019 and 2020, aimed to compare seven cool-season grasses in terms of hay yield, nutrient and ergovaline levels, and relative preference by horses. (Ergovaline is a toxin produced by fungal organisms called endophytes within some tall fescue cultivars. It can cause reproductive problems in broodmares.) They also explored whether nutrient levels affected preference.
