This Saturday, New Mexicans have the opportunity to safely dispose of unused, expired or unwanted prescription medications at numerous locations statewide.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is part of the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, an initiative created by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Participants can anonymously drop off pills, tablets, patches and other solid medications at designated sites free of charge.

The DEA and local law enforcement will collect the medications to prevent misuse, abuse, accidental poisonings and environmental harm caused by improper disposal.

Several counties and cities across New Mexico are participating, including Albuquerque, Farmington, Roswell, Taos, Las Cruces and more.

The take-back event excludes syringes,
