Antonia Morales, the Duranguito resident who battled the city against demolishing her neighborhood has died, according to activist organization Paso Del Sur.

The announcement of Morales' death was shared on Oct. 17, along with plans for funeral services. Morales, also known as Toñita, was 97 years old. Morales had lived in her one-bedroom apartment on Chihuahua Street since 1988.

Morales was outspoken on the city's plans to build an arena in the Duranguito neighborhood and refused to leave her home during years-long litigation. In January 2023 , the El Paso City Council voted to abandon the long-embattled Downtown arena project and reallocate the funds to upgrade and renovate existing city facilities.

Morales was one of the last remaining residents of the neighborhood.
