In October, several new laws went into effect in Florida, and one law is putting harsher penalties on people who use tracking devices without a person's consent.

Installation or Use of Tracking Devices or Applications, also known as Senate Bill 1168 , makes it a second-degree offense if someone uses a tracking device on a person's property or to track their movements to commit a dangerous crime.

If someone murders, assaults, kidnaps, robs or rapes someone who was tracked, under the new law, they can face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

The bill was unanimously passed by the Florida Legislature earlier this year.

In 2024, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 758, which made it illegal to use tracking devices without someone's consent and made it a third-degree offense.
